Nepal issues record number of climbing permits to Mt. Qomolangma this spring

KATHMANDU - Nepal has given permits to the highest ever number of climbers to summit the Mt. Qomolangma this spring, Nepal's Department of Tourism, said.

The department which issues expedition permits, state that it issued expedition permits to 374 climbers associated with 37 teams as of Thursday.

"This is the highest ever number of climbers receiving climbing permits to summit the Mt. Qomolangma in one spring season," Mira Acharya, director at the department, said on Thursday. "As we have not stopped issuing permits, the number may further go up in the next few days."

According to the department, Indian climbers have got the highest number of climbing permit with 87 Indian citizens getting the permit. The United States came second with 68 climbers getting permit followed by China with 67. The spring is the main season to climb the Mt. Qomolangma and other Himalayan peaks.

In 2017, the department had issued climbing permits to 366 climbers, which was then the record permits issued before it was broken by this year's climbing permits. In the spring of 2018, the department had issued climbing permits to 346 climbers associated with 38 groups.

According to Acharya, record climbing permit has been issued this year due to growing attraction of people around the world towards the Mt. Qomolangma, also known as Mt. Everest.
